Free plan: good for exploration, limited for work
The free plan gives you access to Claude Sonnet with daily message limits. You'll hit the limit quickly if you're doing substantial work. The free plan is good for:
- Trying Claude for the first time
- Occasional quick questions
- Following along with this tutorial to understand concepts
The free plan does not give you Projects (crucial for maintaining context across sessions), Memory (Claude learning your preferences), or access to Opus (the most powerful model). For any serious work, you need Pro.
Pro plan ($20/month): the developer and student plan
Pro unlocks everything you need as an individual learner or developer:
- 5× more usage — enough for intensive daily use (coding sessions, writing, research)
- All models — including Claude Opus for complex reasoning tasks
- Projects — persistent context across conversations (essential for code projects)
- Artifacts — Claude generates actual runnable files you can download
- Memory — Claude remembers your preferences, role, and communication style
- Priority access — no "Claude is at capacity" errors
Team plan ($25/user/month): for small organizations
Team adds shared Projects (multiple people contributing to the same context), a basic admin dashboard, and pooled usage. Minimum 2 seats. Good for:
- Small dev teams sharing a code project context in Claude
- Research teams collaborating on document analysis
- Startups wanting to use Claude across the organization with some governance
Enterprise: contact Anthropic
Enterprise adds SSO, SCIM provisioning, SOC 2 compliance, no training on your data by default, dedicated capacity, and custom API limits. This is the plan for banks, healthcare companies, and large corporations. Pricing is negotiated.
Which plan should you choose?
- Learning this course → Free to start, upgrade to Pro when you hit limits
- Active developer → Pro
- Preparing for certification → Pro (you need Projects and all models)
- Building a product with Claude → Pro + API plan (separate billing)
- Company-wide deployment → Team or Enterprise
